Behind the scenes.

The problem:

The program needed to show AACN alignment at two levels:

  • Program Learning Outcomes
  • Course Learning Outcomes

Initially, it was unclear how to demonstrate that both levels aligned to AACN domains in a way that was reviewable, defensible, and easy to interpret.

Task analysis:

I developed an alignment structure where each Course Learning Outcome mapped in two directions:

  1. To a corresponding Program Learning Outcome
  2. To one or more AACN domains and competencies (e.g., Person-Centered Care, Population Health, Scholarship)

This ensured that every course outcome could be traced upward to program intent and outward to accreditation standards.

Process & approach:

  • Created an outcome and alignment map in Figma
  • Used color coding and visual symbology to indicate relationships between:
    • AACN domains
    • PLOs
    • CLOs
  • Designed the layout to support quick scanning rather than narrative explanation
